Are Tattoos a Sin in Christianity

There’s no doubt that in the world, there’s a strong controversy surrounding the topic of religious tattoos in Christianity. On one hand, there are those who consider them a true act of love and devotion to their beliefs, but on the other hand, others say it’s contradictory to the same gospel.

And it’s true that today, millions of people around the world have tattoos, which they use to show the world their personal tastes or simply to represent a date, a name, a person, and/or, of course, a deity.

However, there are religions that derive from Christianity that view these practices as a “strong sin” because they modify the human body, which the Sacred Scriptures refer to as the temple of God.

A clear example is the book of Leviticus, in its verse 19:28, regardless of the version of the Bible used by these religions, states the following:

“Do not make any cuts on your body for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the Lord.”

It’s there where the crux of the matter lies with regard to the controversy, as many people wonder if it would be or not correct to modify God’s body with religious images, such as the cross, a Bible, a representation of Christ, the Virgin of Guadalupe, etc.

However, the people who ultimately decide to get a religious tattoo, usually justify it by saying that what Leviticus says is that you shouldn’t get tattoos on your skin because of the dead or pagan things, but not about the same religion.

Among the most popular religious tattoos that people tend to get are those related to the Virgin of Guadalupe or the Virgin of Juquila, which are the two most popular in the country.

Other tattoos that are often requested in “tattoo shops” are those related to christianity, mainly just before his crucifixion, that is, with the crown of thorns on his head and looking up to the sky.

There are also others, such as black crosses, some hands holding a rosary or the Holy Bible, as well as people who decide to get angels, verses or entire chapters, and even specific moments like The Last Supper.
