Are you concerned that your tattoos will fade or disappear over time? Then you might be interested in this. A dermatology expert from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) explains why this phenomenon occurs on tattooed skin.
Why do tattoos fade or disappear over time?
One of the reasons why tattoos tend to fade over time is due to the technique used to create them.
According to Paula Torres Camacho, a dermatologist from UNAM, the micro-needle technique can cause significant inflammation, leaving a noticeable scar. This scar makes it so that the tattoo doesn’t stay on the skin, but rather fades away.
Another factor that can cause tattoos to fade is a lack of moisturizing and sunscreen use. Since the skin on a tattooed area undergoes cell renewal, the ink becomes superficial and eventually fades away over time.
5 Body Parts Where Tattoos Fade
Tattoos are definitely permanent (unless you get them removed with a laser), but the ink isn’t like Wolverine’s adamantium or Wakanda’s vibranium :), so if you don’t take care of it, your tattoo can change color, the lines can start to look strange, and in some cases, part of the design can disappear completely. No amount of touch-ups can prevent this from happening again.

If you really want your tattoo to look perfect in the next 10, 20, or 30 years, you need to take good care of it, and choose the area carefully, considering that factors like friction and use can affect its appearance. Experts say that areas where the skin is prone to wear and tear or is more exposed to the sun are the ones that can present more problems with tattoo fading (and that’s not the artist’s fault).
The Palms of the Hands
Even if you don’t lift weights, this is a part of the body that we all use every day, making it harder for the ink to penetrate the layers and for a tattoo to stay vibrant. This includes the fingers. You can get tattoos there if you want, but you should know that there’s a 99% chance that your tattoo will start to look blurry and lose its color.
Tattoos on the Hands
Not just the palms, but the entire hand. This part of the body is often exposed to the sun (which is a grave mistake that causes fading) and the elements, and you should already know that the sun is the worst enemy of ink and can cause it to lose its color.
Additionally, since it’s a zone where it’s harder for the ink to penetrate, you should know that black ink won’t be as intense and colored ink won’t be as vibrant.
On the Feet
This has to do with the fact that most of the day we have our feet in socks and shoes, generating friction and affecting the color and appearance of tattoos.
On the Elbows
Primarily on the outer part, tattoos on the elbows can fade due to the fact that you constantly bend your arms and lean on them. If you’re going to get a tattoo in this area, try to get it on the bend of the arm, in a zone where you don’t lean directly on it.
Armpits or Inside the Arm
For the same reason as elbow tattoos, your arms are in constant motion, generating friction and slowly damaging the tattoos.
How to Prevent Your Tattoos from Fading or Disappearing
Keep it hydrated. Post-care is crucial, and you should remember to use a moisturizing cream on the tattooed area to keep the skin healthy. This will help the tattoo heal faster, better, and last longer. It’s recommended to use an antibacterial product that’s fragrance-free and water-based.

Avoid the sun. It’s essential to avoid the sun during the first few weeks while the tattoo is healing. Ideally, keep the area covered and use a strong SPF sunscreen even after it’s healed, as the sun can affect the ink at any time.
Avoid tight clothing. Tight clothing generates friction, and friction causes tattoos to fade. As much as possible, avoid having the area in direct contact with fabric or with items like backpack straps.
