Can we go to heaven with tattoos

Can We Go to Heaven with Tattoos
5/5 - (1 vote)

In response of the question “Can we go to heaven with tattoos?” of whether it is a sin to get tattoos or to put earrings all over, we answer that it is not a sin. No one has come to me confessing that sin until now. But a Catholic Christian should reflect on things before carrying them out. In this case, they should consider some things, such as health.

They should be aware that they can contract diseases such as HIV and Hepatitis C. The latter was the reason why in the United States of North America, they prohibited getting tattoos back in 1961 due to an outbreak of this disease spread by poor hygiene when getting tattoos. Another thing that a Christian should consider is that we should not mark ourselves with images that offend others or with anything that contradicts our religion.

Many people may call themselves Catholics and mark themselves with images of half-naked women or with coarse, satanic slogans, and everything that offends the religion. The other reason is that we may be prevented from donating blood for a certain time.

Many times, by donating blood, we can save a life, but being tattooed, we are unable to do so, either because the ink contaminates the blood or because we contract some disease.

Tattoos in heaven

The tattoo is not a modern practice. In Egypt and Libya, mummies with tattoos dating back hundreds of years before Christ have been found, and the same has happened in South America. Many of the images that these mummies have engraved are directly related to the worship of pagan gods.

The researcher Steve Gilbert notes: “The oldest non-abstract tattoo known represents Bes, who, according to Egyptian mythology, is the lascivious deity of entertainment.” Pagan worshippers, such as the Egyptians, tattooed the names or symbols of their gods on their chests or arms. In light of these cases in the past, some people ask me: “Is it a sin to get tattoos?”

In the Bible, in the Old Testament, God prohibited his people from getting tattoos: “Do not make any cuts on your body for the dead. Do not mark your bodies with tattoos. I am the Lord.” (Lev. 19:28) We can also say that he prohibited making cuts: “You are the sons of the Lord your God. Do not make cuts on your bodies.” (Deut. 14:1)

With these verses, we can ask ourselves if it is a sin to put earrings in the body in an exaggerated way or to make cuts in the skin with the sole intention of drawing attention. But before answering whether it is a sin or not, let’s analyze these cases a bit more.

About the tattoos

The tattoo was rediscovered by Europeans when they came into contact with Native Americans and Polynesians during the era of great explorations. The same word “tattoo” was introduced into the English language and other European languages from Tahiti, where it was collected by James Cook’s expedition in 1769.

Over time, and with the increase in tattooed people, both Native Americans and Polynesians, and later Europeans abroad, attracted a lot of interest in exhibitions, fairs, and circuses in Europe and the United States during the 18th and 19th centuries.

The first electric tattooing device was patented in the United States in 1891. The United States became a center of influence in tattoos. And it’s not just something from that time, we consider that in the present day they still have the same profile.

Tatoos in the bible

We find in the Bible: “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.” (1 Cor. 6:19-20)

God loves us with or without tattoos, that’s not in question. But let’s try to reflect on our actions before we do them, so that we always give a good testimony of the Christian name through them. It’s not just through preaching that Christ is announced, but also through our attitudes that we give reason for the Gospel.

May your attitudes from now on always correspond to those of a child of God. If you already have tattoos, then just bear them, but if you don’t, think carefully about it. Don’t recommend to others that they get them. Instead, encourage them to reflect on it so that they don’t do it.
