Tattoos: Where Are They Illegal?

Tattoos Should Be Illegal
4.5/5 - (2 votes)

If you like to travel, getting a tattoo may not be a good idea, since tattoos are illegal in some countries and may prevent you from entering.

One of the countries where tattoos are Illegal is Japan. For example, in saunas or other public facilities, there are signs that indicate that people with tattoos are not allowed to enter. But also in other places like public pools, bars, or gyms, those with tattoos are prohibited from entering.

This last example is one of the surprises for travelers, since tattoos are still associated with criminals in Japanese culture due to a government ban in the 19th century, despite the fact that Japan has a rich tradition of body art.

On the other hand, there are cases of Sri Lanka and Myanmar. In these two countries, tattoos are generally accepted, but depending on the design, since there can be no representation of Buddha.

Here, it’s considered “disrespectful” for people to wear them as decoration on their bodies, and tourists could get into serious trouble if they wear one. In Myanmar, for example, a Spanish tourist was almost deported in 2016 for wearing a Buddha on his ankle, and ultimately had to leave the country at the request of the authorities, who explained that “some people might consider it an insult to the Buddhist religion.”

But it’s not the only case, since in Sri Lanka, a British citizen was detained at the airport in 2013 and the following year, another tourist was arrested and deported for wearing a Buddha sitting on a lotus flower tattooed on her arm.

Another country that catches attention is Thailand. Despite the large number of places and tattoo shops, and especially, underground tattoo parlors, there is a law that prohibits tattooing images of Buddha. While it’s true that the Asian country is one of the places where tattoos are more accepted, some are considered sacred and should not be shown.

Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and Turkey are the other countries where tattoos are frowned upon, and even banned and punishable by prison. In the case of Iran, men usually don’t have problems, but women with tattoos must follow Islamic codes and have to hide them under their clothing.

Meanwhile, in the UAE, tattoos are considered a form of self-inflicted harm, and although they’re not very common, people with tattoos must remove them to access public service jobs like the Police or the Army. And in Turkey, a 2014 law prohibited tattoos and piercings among minors, although makeup or dyeing one’s hair is also not allowed.

Why Tattoos Are Illegal?

Tattoos are marks, designs, or texts that we engrave on our skin, as a way to remember something or someone who was important to us. In many countries, like Spain, they are very common and more and more people are getting tattoos.

However, those who like to travel should know that in some places around the world, a illegal tattoo can be a good enough excuse to go to jail, since they are frowned upon or banned.

These permanent designs on our body are created by inserting inks into the deepest layers of the skin. Tattoos have existed in various cultures throughout history and can have different meanings. Although today there are technologies that allow you to “remove” a tattoo, the truth is that its removal can be difficult and expensive, since they are serigraphed to achieve permanence over time.

The tattooing process can cause some discomfort or pain, depending on the location of the tattoo or personal tolerance.
